The Haren & the storm

Long ago, a solitary hare lived by the shores of Lake Vättern. He was called the Harge Hare. No one knew where he came from, only that he moved silently like a shadow among trees and stones.

One day, however, the wind began to sing differently. First softly, then stronger.

Then: Crash! Boom! Clouds rolled in like dark mountains, and the wind twisted and broke the trees.

“Run!” voices cried in the darkness. And everyone ran. Everyone except the Harge Hare.

Amid the roaring storm, he heard something else — a faint cry. The hare followed the sound and found an owl trapped beneath a broken tree.

“Run before the flames reach you!” she coughed.

“I don’t run away from those in need,” said the hare, sinking his teeth into the branch. He pulled, struggled, and finally freed her.

“You stayed,” said the owl, surprised.

“I stay for those who need it,” the hare replied simply.

They made their way toward the lake. Ash and embers swirled around them. The owl could not fly; her feathers were heavy with soot. As they reached the water, a roar echoed across the waves.

A beaver struggled in the water. His dam had begun to collapse.

“You there!” shouted the hare. “Come ashore!”

“Never!” the beaver replied. “I won’t abandon my home!”

“Your home will burn if you stay!” cried the owl.

The beaver snorted, looked around, and finally gave in. Together they pulled him onto the shore.

“You ruined my work,” he muttered.

“We saved you,” said the hare. “Your work cannot survive without you.”

Just then, a squeaking voice came through the smoke.

“Help! The fire is spreading!”

A small squirrel rushed toward them, covered in soot and trembling with fear.

“Soon everything will burn!” she squeaked.

“We must stop the fire,” said the Harge Hare.

“And how?” huffed the beaver. “My dam is in pieces!”

The owl looked toward the lake. “Then we build a new one,” she said calmly. “One strong enough to hold the water long enough.”

“Build? Now?” squeaked the squirrel. “Everything is burning!”

“Exactly,” said the hare. “We don’t have time to think about what’s impossible. We must do what needs to be done.”

So they began to work. The beaver showed them how to place the logs. The hare dragged branches, the squirrel gathered twigs and moss, and the owl watched for the flames. Piece by piece, they built a small dam.

As the fire approached, the dam shone like a dark mirror in the glow of the flames.

“This could save the forest,” said the owl.

“But…” the beaver hesitated. “If we open it, everything I built will be gone again.”

The Harge Hare placed a paw on his shoulder.

“I know,” he said gently. “But sometimes you must tear down to save.”

The beaver looked at the others, sighed, and smiled crookedly.

“Alright then. But the next dam will be twice as good.”

The squirrel grinned. “And I’ll help — though I’m not carrying the big logs!”

They laughed before getting to work. They pushed, pulled, and struggled until the dam gave way and the water surged forward like a roaring river. It rushed into the forest, extinguished the flames, and filled the air with a fresh, cooling breeze.

When morning came, everything was still. The forest lived.

The Harge Hare, the Owl, the Beaver, and the Squirrel stood together at the water’s edge.

“The storm took much,” said the owl.

“But it gave us each other,” replied the hare.

The beaver smiled tiredly. “And a brand-new construction.”

“And a great story!” shouted the squirrel, jumping onto a rock.

They laughed. And there, by the shores of Lake Vättern, their friendship was born — from courage, mistakes, and the will to begin again.

Even today, when the wind sweeps across the lake, it is said you can hear their voices among the trees — four friends who learned that no one survives alone.
