A Historical Gem by Lake Vättern

A visit to Stjernsund Castle is a perfect excursion during your stay at Harge Resort if you want to combine beautiful nature, culture, and history in a place that offers something extra beyond the ordinary. The castle is beautifully situated on a peninsula by Lake Alsen, just south of Askersund, and offers guided tours, park walks, a café, and a shop – a full-day adventure for families or couples who enjoy cultural experiences.

What is Stjernsund Castle?

Stjernsund Castle is a neoclassical castle with well-preserved interiors from the 19th century – a time when the castle was owned by the royal Bernadotte family and became one of Sweden’s most elegant manors. Guided tours of the state rooms, the billiard wing, and the servants’ quarters provide a fascinating insight into what life at the castle was like in the past.

Living History for All Ages

Stjernsund Castle is more than just a building—it is a living time capsule. During the summer season, guided tours are offered in the castle’s main floor, the servants’ basement, and the billiard wing, where visitors hear stories about life here through the centuries, the lifestyle of the nobility, and the daily lives of those who served the castle.
For children and families, themed tours and guided walks in the castle park are also available—a perfect way to combine play, learning, and nature experiences.

Exhibitions also highlight the castle’s agricultural history: Stjernsund Estate, which was run here for a long time, was known for its livestock breeding and is the origin of the Swedish Red-and-White cattle breed (SRB).

Garden, Park, and Café – a Place for Reflection

Around the castle spreads a beautiful park with walking paths, greenery, and views over the water—perfect for a peaceful stroll after the tour.

A recent addition is the newly established orangery—a place where the castle garden’s tradition of plants and exotic species continues. The orangery is used for summer exhibitions and winter protection for delicate plants, adding an extra dimension for visitors interested in botany.

After the tour, visitors can relax at the charming castle café, enjoying homemade pastries, light lunches, and tasty meals, often made with ingredients from the estate. This makes a visit to Stjernsund more than just a historical excursion—it becomes a complete experience of history, nature, and flavor.

Askersund – tips from the center manager

Askersund is a place of great variety, and I truly appreciate that everything the town, the water, nature, and culture have to offer is always close at hand.
I work as a tourism development officer at Visit Askersund and also serve as the town centre manager for local commerce.

For guests staying at Harge Resort, there are many excursion opportunities nearby – ranging from hiking and cycling to swimming, cultural sites, and a wide selection of events throughout the year.

One of my personal favourites when it comes to hiking is the Mariedamm Trail. The nature there is both diverse and easily accessible, with an interesting connection to the culture and history of southern Bergslagen. Combined with the charm of a small town and a constantly vibrant event scene, this creates a varied experience, no matter the season.
