Tiveden – Sweden’s Most Mythical Wilderness
Tiveden is one of Sweden’s most fascinating wilderness areas – a national park filled with ancient forests, fairytale-like nature and dramatic landscapes. Here you’ll encounter deep faults, giant boulders, clear forest lakes and moss-covered pine heaths that make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world.
Nature Experiences and Wilderness Just a Trip Away
If you enjoy dramatic nature, hiking, and the quiet of the forest, Tiveden is a perfect excursion during your stay at Harge Resort. Tiveden is one of Sweden’s most dramatic natural areas, offering untouched forests, hilly trails, and small lakes that make for an active and memorable day trip.
What is Tiveden?
Tiveden is a large forested area featuring one of southern Sweden’s wildest and most fascinating landscapes – deep fissure valleys, massive boulders, and moss-covered forests that give a true sense of wilderness between Lakes Vättern and Vänern. There are also several small lakes and exciting natural formations to explore.
What can you do here?
Hiking on marked trails – over 34 km of trails with varying lengths and difficulty levels, from short loops to longer rounds of 9–10 km.
Enjoy dramatic nature – walk among high boulders, deep forest passages, and viewpoints where the forest opens up.
Nature outings & picnics – bring a snack and find a nice spot by a lake or on a rocky outcrop.
Swimming & bathing – some of the smaller lakes are perfect for a refreshing dip after hiking.

What Can You See and Do Around Tiveden Besides the National Park?
The area surrounding Tiveden offers much more than the trails inside the national park. You’ll find small cafés, farm shops, lakes for paddling and several viewpoints that give you a completely different perspective of the forest. Many visitors combine their visit to Tiveden with exploring the surrounding cultural landscape – old cottages, winding gravel roads and forest clearings that feel taken straight from an Astrid Lindgren story.
Whether you want to cycle, swim, enjoy good food or just soak in the stillness, there are plenty of places worth stopping at along the way. Many even choose to stay longer than planned, simply because the area is so varied and welcoming.
What Is Hiking in Tiveden Like?
Hiking in Tiveden is an experience unlike many other Swedish forests. The paths can be rocky and hilly, but they are well-marked and offer constant natural surprises – moss-covered boulders, narrow passages, mirror-like forest lakes and viewpoints where the forest stretches out in all directions.
Visitors appreciate the strong feeling of wilderness, yet the area remains safe and accessible. You don’t need to hike far to experience the magic of Tiveden – even short loops offer a powerful nature experience. During high season it’s recommended to come early in the day for a calmer visit and easier parking. Regardless of experience level, there’s always a trail that fits, making Tiveden a perfect destination for families, couples and adventurous hikers.

Askersund – tips from the center manager
Askersund is a place of great variety, and I truly appreciate that everything the town, the water, nature, and culture have to offer is always close at hand.
I work as a tourism development officer at Visit Askersund and also serve as the town centre manager for local commerce.
For guests staying at Harge Resort, there are many excursion opportunities nearby – ranging from hiking and cycling to swimming, cultural sites, and a wide selection of events throughout the year.
One of my personal favourites when it comes to hiking is the Mariedamm Trail. The nature there is both diverse and easily accessible, with an interesting connection to the culture and history of southern Bergslagen. Combined with the charm of a small town and a constantly vibrant event scene, this creates a varied experience, no matter the season.
